This might seem non-related because of the different video card, but I
think it's the same thing.
I remember last 1999 (or maybe around 2000, can't remember exact year),
during the 3.x versions of XFree86, that the driver for Voodoo
3/Banshee, listing the amount of memory used by each program, X will
appear to consume a huge amount of memory. The explanation then was that
somehow, it appear to the system that X is consuming
overhead + (video_memory * bits_per_pixel / 8)
Basta, it's something like that. ;) Don't know where to look for
reference now cuz linux.3dfx.com is now down, after nvidia bought 3dfx
if course.
I've observed that this seems to be the behavior of some cards and
driver combination. My tnt2 + Nvdia binary drivers says that it's
consuming more memory than my physical memory + swap. ;)
