The results of Belarc Advisor were pretty good. Quite impressive indeed.
Is there something like this that can allow me to just sit on
the server and probe all workstations? :)

i use Belarc Advisor for auditing MS Win Boxes.
it can detect hardware and all of the softwares installed
(even without registry entry). the output is in html format,
so i created a php script that parses & inserts/updates
the inventory data into an mysql database. from there
i can generate a report regarding unauthorized softwares
like CS, C&C Generals, YM, etc., software licenses,
missing/altered hardware (memory, etc.), IP addresses, etc.
and we only did this due to the BSA crackdown on software
piracy last year.

*i haven't tried auditing *nix boxes.
