You can do a lot with nagios, you can create your own scripts and integrate it with 
nagios. One thing I've noticed in nagios is the output must be in one line, like 
"Database is OK" or "All filesystem is OK", but nagios is way cool.

thanks.. also planning of doing it by the port checking by tcp.. but
sometimes it may happen specially on an oracle database systems that the
port is listening but the actual instance or database is down. dont know if
this is applicable on a sybase database.. thanks for the quick response
