When you do a "make dep" you are told that this method is old and is
not a necessary step.  Also in the older kernels, "make config" or
the equivalent "make ____config" took care of creating the links,
not "make dep".  Further "make config" does not create the asm-generic
link, which for some reason is needed by the build system for 2.5 and 2.6.
I think it is just that 2.5 and 2.6.0-test1 are just too experimental
and too many things are just not yet in place.
