i don't use mozilla-mail, no idea what that's like.  but for problems
like this, when i run out of ideas, i sometimes find it useful to
sniff the network.  ethereal is nice.  tcpdump is good too, and
better for remote work over a slow link.  but for your purpose,
ethereal is probably best.
