Hi all!
This is one of those never-ending Samba printing questions.
Current Network Setup:
1. Intel Pentium 4 workstation, 256MB RAM, 40G HD, RH 9.0 installed and
updated to latest Samba, kernel, LPRng, CUPS, foomatic, LinNeighborhood
XFSamba, and various other packages.
2. Windows 2000 workstation acting as DHCP server with 64MB RAM, 40G HD.
This PC also has an HP LaserJet 1000 attached to its USB port.
3. Another Windows 2000 workstation.
4. All PCs connected via a Planet ethernet 8-port switch.
PROBLEM: I can't use my Linux box to print to the HP Laserjet 1000. I've
read tons of How-Tos on sambra printing and either they don't apply to the
current setup or they recommend attaching the printer to the Linux box and
configuring Samba to accept print jobs from the Windows clients. Isn't
there a way to get this to work?
RELEVANT DATA:
1. Here are the relevant contents of /etc/printcap:
hpLaserJ:\
:ml#0:\
:mx#0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hpLaserJ:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/hpLaserJ/hpLaserJ.acct:\
:sh:\
:lp=|/usr/share/printconf/util/smbprint:\
:lpd_bounce=true:\
:if=/usr/share/printconf/util/mf_wrapper:
2. I've used the redhat-switch-printer utility to switch between LPRng and
CUPS and it doesn't make much difference.
3. No print jobs appear in the print queue on the Windows machine.
4. When I use lpr to send a file to the printer or printconf to print a
test page, nothing appears in the print queue in the Linux machine
either.
5. As a stopgap, I print to a PDF or Postscript file using my Linux
applications, and then go over to either of the Windows machines and
print the file (K-L-U-D-G-E-!).
I've been reading the tldp docs and the O'Reilly book but the suggestions
don't seem to work. can anyone give some step-by-step configuration and
troubleshooting procedures?
Hope you guys can help. Thanks a million in advance!
God bless!
