Er, that's not it.

They might assert copyright over particular files that express the
form of their logos -- but that would be a bit silly, since all you'd
have to do is draw your own instantiation of that logo design, in which 
case _you_ would hold the copyright over that.

The primary means of control they attempt to use for logos, and the more
applicable instrument of law, is trademark (not copyright).

Er, did you mean to say trademark the first time (when you said
copyright)?

But no, the reason you might want to ask their permission isn't because
you "should", but rather simply because you've decided you wish to
comply with whatever their policy is to make them happy and not threaten
or harrass you.
