That being said, despite your choice of a few bad examples, your main
thesis isn't invalidated. The biggest example I would give is the state
of GNU/Linux on the desktop as a whole. That depends totally on
usability, and how usable are Gnome and KDE compared to even Windows,
and not to mention OS X?
Getting there... the WindowMaker, KDE and Gnome desktops are _at least_
on the level of the usability of Windows 9x (a lot richer in terms of
core features, but still behind in terms of availability of high-level
widgets)... we're still waiting for more applications to arrive, but
the foundation is *finally* sufficient to build nice apps on. Legacy
'nix UI conventions are starting to give way to more CUA-like ones on
these desktops although I wonder if it's possible to come up with a more
usable hybrid because I feel there are certain cases where 'nix conventions
are more compact.
KDE/Gnome/Windowmaker + many other Linux desktop environs do make it
a point to interoperate with each other via a common DnD (drag and drop)
protocol. i.e. You can run both KDE and Gnome apps on a Windowmaker
desktop and you should be able to DnD among them. If they finally get
around to making WinGtk apps talk DnD with other Windows apps... that
would be SUPER, although this could be a very complicated problem.
[ Question: Does anyone know if Qt apps can interact via DnD with the
Windows desktop and Windoze apps? ]
I couldn't decide between KDE, Gnome and WindowMaker before... but I
think I've finally settled on the latter, WindowMaker is beautiful,
functional and yet pretty slim. Judging from http://xwinman.org/vote.html
WindowMaker users lurv their desktop, heck I even registered to vote
for it! :-)
Might even try to learn to use WINGs (WINGs Is Not GNUstep) widgets
one of these days even if you can't get it cross-platform. NeXT
style widgets rock.
