Egads, what mailer is this?

Whatever it is, it does horrible things to ASCII text. Here it is,
quoted in its full glory:

Egads, Jeremy, could you please turn that off?

Anyhow, what I've been hearing about the Centrino thing is just a
Pentium M ("Banias") CPU joined at the hip to a new 802.11b chipset.
The Banias isn't a problem, but the 802.11b wireless chipset is --
apparently because it's a low-end cruddy pile of junk that offloads
practically all processing onto the host CPU. In other words, it's
the "winmodem" of wireless chipsets. Which explains why reports suggest
that it performs terribly even on OSes for which the special required
software exists. And Intel hasn't released such software for Linux, nor
released the required information to our programming community.
Therefore, there's no support for that part of the Centrino.

I know that some people on this list actually go to the trouble required
to install special proprietary drivers for winmodem chipsets.
Personally, I wouldn't: I'd buy a real modem, instead. Similarly, if I
were forced to use a Centrino-based laptop, I'd probably buy a real
PCMCIA wireless card for it.
