But what's one's irritation with cruddy hardware worth?

Moreover, what's it worth to avoid linking proprietary binary-only code
into one's GPLed kernel?

In my view, luck means using real wireless chipsets: The "driver" would
have to, as with winmodem chipsets, emulate in software the omitted
circuitry. It's guaranteed to be buggy (inside kernel ring zero!),
performance-robbing, binary-only, proprietary, and subject to breakage
as the kernel interfaces change over time. The smart move is to eschew
both the driver and the crippled hardware.

Given that you're unlucky enough to own the hardware, you can still
cut your losses by ignoring the crippled chipset and supplementing it
with a real one via the PCMCIA socket.
