I think some applications may have some problems..., But I have not
encountered any.... We are using a Slackware 9.1 distro and I/we Just
upgraded (because ACPI support of 2.4.23 is buggy, at least with our very
very thin server ECS A530+) to kernel 2.6.0.
I think 2.6.0 also licked the "i8253 count too high....reseting", problem w/
the A530+.
So far so good....(but Slackware 9.1 distro was already 4.6.0 ready) and I/we
get to use encrypted(blowfish, twofish etc.) loopback devices w/o having to
patch the kernel
Plus no more need to tweak the alsa source that came with the distro... alsa
has been integrated into the kernel ....hehehe (2.4.23 have some definitions
in the header files that caused a conflict w/ the alsa module codes---
redefinitions....)
If I read the article correctly.... RedHat is not ready to package 2.6.0 with
it's distoros any time soon ( 2005/2006 I think....) Please correct me if I
misinterpreted it.
My advice is, if you can spare the hd space and time, and want to try out the
new kernel test the upgrade on another (non-mission critical partion)
installation of RedHat 9.0.....
As some may say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".... but where would we be
today, without people who went against that saying. hehehehe
