I believe there are a few other packages you need to get kernel 2.6 going. Take a look at http://ozzzy.dhis.org/kernel26.html
Although this is for a mandrake 9.2 distro, i'm sure some of the missing packages are the reason why some portions of your distro don't work on with the 2.6 kernel.
