I wish it would work that way.  But each "service" can run on only one node;
I can't do load balancing.

Here's what I'm up to... the idea is to run virtual machines on a group of
servers, say maybe two or three VMware guests per machine. VMware is nice,
but without any inherent failover features running several servers on a
single host presents a dangerous point of failure. So in comes the N+1
cluster. VMs will be put on a SAN or other shared storage media.

It's not much, really, and is quite simple to implement using perl or some
other script. But there has to be a better, "cooler" way hehehe :)

Right now, I'm setting up a two-node version of my cluster. Even if I run
it active/active, there's not enough processor power to run all the servers
I need. Maybe I'll just go for several pairs of two-node clusters :)

yes, heartbeat (alone) can only support two-node failover cluster. if
you want to implement a N+1 failover cluster using linux, heartbeat
can only be used on the "cluster manager" or LVS Routers for its HA
while the rest of the nodes should be utilizing LVS in order to achieve
N+1 Failover & Load-balancing.
