There's no need to trust Microsoft. We just have to look at the licensing terms they use for the code which they open source (and be mindful of patent issues). Truly free code is free, no matter what its source.

I don't expect Microsoft to be releasing any truly exciting
open source stuff though, so I don't see what the brouahaha
is all about. PR move and a bit of value added to their
product platform... this is what its about. But it's nothing
malicious.

I'm not privy to the terms of any deals between Microsoft and
InstallShield and have no idea if there was any breach of good faith,
but from a end-user's point of view, I can't see what's so bad about
this.

The butler did it...I tell you...it's always the butler.

Can you believe that MS' PR is so incredibly abysmal that people find themselves defending (in a sense) closed source software over open source ones released by them!?! They've clearly done something terrible in the past to deserve this... LOL!

Anyway, I don't think InstallShield has gone by the wayside yet.
Their long and cozy relationship with dev tool vendors is a kind of
protectionist/monopolist situation itself. Nothing is preventing
them from improving their installer tool to become better than WiX
(maybe it already is) and thus keep up their market.

I also can't see what is wrong with Microsoft wanting to cut down
on 3rd party licensing costs in this manner. Fwiw, when it comes to
C/C++ libraries, MS has actually switched from using their own to
licensing a 3rd party one - Dinkumware's. Can't think up of a
conspiracy theory for this one...
