kernel-2.6.x does support SATA hardware raid and Promise SATA raid controller is one of those. but the implementation of Promise SATA raid controller is not 100% hardware and is done thru software emulation. thus, the linux kernel supports this controller not as a Hardware Raid but as a Software Raid.
