Helo linux Guro's

Can anyone help me with my problem. I have installed a
customized package for a desktop application using
redhat linux 9 in a compaq deskpro pc. The installation goes smoothly and without any problem
but when i try to open the openoffice applications, it
took about 20 to 30 seconds before it opens.

This seems "normal".

Can anyone provide me a customize list for a desktop application wherein the performance of the pc will not be degraded.

What do you mean by this? Alternative applications? For word-processing there's Abiword, spreadsheet - Gnumeric, presentations - umm, html pages linked together using Mozilla in fullscreen(?).

BTW below is the specification of the PC pentium III

What Ghz?

256 memory
40 gig hard drive

What rpm?

built-in video and soundcard.

Anyway, mine is a P3 500mhz, 320mb SDRAM, 80gb HDD 7200rpm. I don't exactly recall what version of OOo came with RH9 (I think it was 1.0.2), but the 1.0.x versions were really slow. You could probably try getting a copy of OOo 1.1.x, which are significantly faster (still not fast enough for my taste though).

Thanks
