i think what u need is a script to check if that particular service
(what is it?) goes up or down then just pipe it to mail (man mail). for
me i use nagios (www.nagios.org) for a comprehensive checking of
services (it has mail alerts, too). i also write some plugins to check
services not covered by nagios-plugins.
