You may be interested in a more generic tool for service monitoring
called mon <http://www.kernel.org/software/mon/>. It's easy enough to
use and has built in scripts for the most common actions, which include
sending out mail of course.

If you don't need a full-blown MTA software on your system you can use
nullmailer <http://untroubled.org/nullmailer/> since you'll need an MTA
to bring out the mail from your machine to some mail server that will
handle sending the mail to your mailbox.
