Yes, UML can take a lot of CPU resources.  In linode.com there was a
problem when updatedbs of the linodes were initially set by default to
run simultaneously via cron.  The net result was that everything was
sluggish for sometime.  The thread discussing the problem can be found

But since the hosts were updated to the 2.6 kernels and the updatedbs
were scheduled differently, the problems seemed to have disappeared
