andy, i use mplayer and love it.  :)

it has a set of windows codec packs for ASF, WMV, etc. but even without 
those, it reads most everything i throw at it. in fact i use 
mplayer/mencoder *even on windows* because it's more robust than WMP.

and mencoder can actually encode form a V4L device directly!

(i used to use xine, but it has instability issues like your desktop thing 
which i assume are related to DRM/XVideo/hardware overlay).
