Standalone mode, certainly.  Inetd/xinetd seems to be problematic,
especially since both "super-servers" have been known to have security
holes from time to time.  With the fact that qpopper and other programs
that you run under it have been known to have security bugs at times
(although recent qpopper versions have been ok), doing that only
increases your risk.

Qpopper is an excellent choice if you have no more than several dozen
users.  If you start becoming much bigger than that, you'll want to
move to another system like Courier or Cyrus.
