A friend of mine has been using CrossOver Office (you can get it from BitTorrent... technically, piracy) to run MS Outlook 2003 (!!) and Office XP on SuSE 9.1. And he has yet to find glitches in the implementation.
And you know what's scary? he says that Excel or Word under CrossOver Office is **FASTER** than OpenOffice native on the same box. Faster to start, and more responsive.
Even with OpenOffice.org pre-linked? It might not be surprising though. OOo is pretty bloated.
I've been using OpenOffice 1.1.2 on my linux laptop that is a PII w/ 160MB RAM and I find it pretty amazing-- it creates very compact files (a third file size that of an MS office), has internal the PDF conversion function and loading time is acceptable considering I have a slow processor. But then, the performance improvement in my case, can probably be attributed to my 2.6.4 kernel, i've seen a big improvement generally on my x-windows system from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel version.
