It's ok to use a kernel with CONFIG_REISERFS_FS_XATTR enabled on a regular
  reiserfs partition. Seems more like a hardware(disk or controller)
problem. Any extra info like logs etc. Have you tried using the latest
vanilla kernels if yes try turning on and off CONFIG_REISERFS_FS_XATTR and
have CONFIG_REISERFS_CHECK always on
