You don't need to recompile your code to use the on-processor compiler. Of course, for best performance, you'd want to use an AMD64 distro - or recompile at least PostgreSQL (and the kernel and glibc?) I'm using an older dual-proc Athlon MP 2200 at my client, and I rebuilt the Pg RPM for '-march=athlon-mp' for good measure. On a related note: Is multi-channel SATA acceptable for a low-end database nowadays?
