my generic solution to things like this is to use knoppix to
detect everything, then use the knoppix settings to tell my
real linux (mandrake) how to detect and configure everything.

but i don't know if knoppix uses xorg. on the other hand,
maybe it doesn't matter if the config files are basically
the same format.

if they're not, or if using the knoppix x config won't work
with xorg, maybe someone knows of a linux on CD that
has similarly good detection and uses xorg?
