Hi Paolo,

Out of curiousity, I tried transferring a 699Mb file (Knoppix 3.7 iso) using NFS, FTP and Samba.
results:

NFS = 56 secs
FTP  = 59 secs
Samba = 1 min and 07 secs

My workstation is using 2.6.9 kernel (stock), filesystem is Reiserfs. The nfs, ftp and samba server is using 2.4.21(stock) and filesystem is xfs. (Both are slackware)

If you suspect Mandrake's heavily patched kernel is the culprit, try to compile a stock kernel (same version) and see if nfs transfer will normalize. Although I dont know any kernel config that may cause that trouble of yours.

You may also want to check if both nics are using 100baseTX full-duplex, and use a crossover cable to connect the 2 nodes to check if the switch/hub is not part of the problem.

regards,
Kenneth

I've encountered some problems connecting with my mandrake 10.1 hosts
- transferring big files using scp or nfs would either be slow (on a
100Mbps line, it's taking 10 minutes or more to transfer a 700MB ISO
image). Tried replacing the old NIC (realtek 8139) to tulip chipset
and back and still the problem doesn't go away.

This problem doesn't manifest when I use HTTP or bittorrent as mode of
transfer - transferring a 700MB ISO image just takes a couple of
seconds using this mode. It's a workaround, but it's kinda annoying to
run an HTTP server just to transfer files within the LAN (and I'm not
considering running an FTP service anywhere anyway... :) I've yet to
try the speeds using Samba... but since I only have 1 windows-based
machine against all other machines running Linux there's not really
much "economic incentive" for me to try it out...

I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this - I've had this
problem ever since I tried out 10.1 CE. I'm already suspecting that
changes in the Linux kernel are causing this - any hints on what
tell-tale signs to look out for? Do I need to revert to an earlier
kernel?
