I have used a Live CD distro called "Digital dolly". It has a Wipe capability with options of Quick, normal & secure. The quick wipe option takes about 4 hours for a 10G HD.

    You can also try shred (man shred for details) which is included already
    on almost all Linux distributions (part of GNU core utils).

    And yes, like other previous posters, it's not as useful if you're using
    it on journalling filesystems.
