I find having cdrdao handy for this, even on CD-ROMs:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cdrdao unlock --device ATA:1,0,0

Simply works wonders. Of course that assumes there are no processes
accessing the device (know through fuser or lsof.) YMMV
