It's hard to answer your query as it would prelude a 'distro war' on this list. 
Yes, I agree that linux distros are basically the same.

I think three of the 'advantages' of Ubuntu are as follows:

1. It carries Linux just in 'one CD', as it contains the basic modules
or applications the developers think are useful to an ordinary user. (Of 
course, the catch is that you
still have to download a bunch of applications and updates for you to use other 
applications
like wine, tex, postgresql server, etc.)

2. Easier and faster to install compared to Fedora, Suse or Mandrake and
even Debian Sarge. (It's because you're installing from just one CD.)

3. The packaging is magnificent. Imagine a name promoting humanity like a
diplomat or a beauty queen?
