what really amazes me is that people get their hackles up about M$
funded security reports, etc. YOU ALL KNOW BETTER! so why the rabid
reacting to what is expected to be a slanted presentation courtesy of
M$ and Alexis de Tocqueville's ghost?

it would be more apt to go off talk to some SUITS and edify them of
the advantages of Linux etc. blowing off steam about how evil M$ is ON
THIS LIST is kinda pointless. we all use Linux here and we all know
the score... right?

or is there some primitive need to put down The Competition in order
to feel better about our technology/career choices? :D

i think it's pretty straightforward that, if you value Freedom above
all, nothing can substitute for Linux or one of the *BSD's (or maybe
MacOS X, because even though it is laden with closed-source code, the
*kernel* is still Free and that's good enough for some people here).
BUT my point was that, I don't think a Free kernel is all that
important (that really has been my underlying point thru all the
ranting and extremely long missives). SO if you need something that
your OS doesn't provide (like.. cheap biometric hardware) then you can
still reap (most) of the benefits of Free software even sitting on a
closed kernel.

Of course ethically that is not acceptable to Mr Stallman or Mr Elep.
it's a choice each one has to make. but to categorically brand any
other platform as inferior because of this consideration is IMHO not
valid. because while the freedom to modify the kernel is a legitimate
technical advantage, it's not a freedom that 95% of the population
will ever exercise. So for those 95%, *ix does not give them anything
extra.
