Hello,

What does the telnet client send to the remote host, how does it work?
You obviously can't have the talk to the sshd daemon on the remost host.
Is it really telnet or is it really just a raw plain text connection.

Thanks Edward. Currently, I have not yet looked into the legacy application source code. However as explained to me by the client, it appears that the custom legacy application does indeed use the telnet protocol inside. Of course, having it directly connect to sshd wouldn't work hence the current issue. That is why my acquaintances and I were taking into account the feasibility of having a proxy-like application somewhere in between. I was hanging on to the possiblity that this was not such an uncommon issue. :)

I suppose having to justify enabling telnetd (only for loopback) on the remote organization will save a lot of time and effort on the part of the client. Still, I am open to additional insights and comments since this will end the current downtime experienced by the client while I commence recoding the legacy app to support SSH.
