  You also need to mount /etc in the changed root environment: I _think_ you
need the -o flag and I've fogotten the proper syntax. (I checked my saved
e-mail messages since 2002 and I don't find the one with the full mount
sequence.)

Tried it using the same syntax as for /sys and /dev. Got the same error.

  When you have /mnt/hd/etc available run lilo (or /sbin/lilo). It will tell
you that you've properly configured it. Then you should be able to reboot
directly from the hard drive and not the live flash drive.

After lunch I'm going to download a different .iso, use dd to put it on the USB stick, and install again.
