I don't know that I've ever seen a usb-scsi adapter in the flesh. It

I saw that, too. But I've been bitten by things like this before, where
it works for a subset of all use cases, just not mine. Hence my reason
for asking.
You may well be
better off going to free geek's thrift shop and seeing if they have a
pci-scsi adapter you could plug into a not-new desktop box.
I actually have one of those, both the older box and the PCI SCSI card,
and it's where I last ran the old scanner. I don't run that box on a
regular basis, and don't have it set up. But that may be the thing I
need to do.
or just
buying a new scanner. or going to a copy place with scanners.
A week or so ago I asked about printers. This was one of the reasons.
Another thought to keep in mind is the multifunction printer may not
support higher than 300 DPI. Usually not a problem but my flatbead
Epson does much higher when I need it.

The nice thing about this Epson scanner is that it has a larger flat
bed, so it can scan legal size. Not that I need to do that often, but
it's nice to have. I may just have to set that box up again. Last I
remember, it has Ubuntu 12.04 on it. But since I probably won't need to
access the Internet with it, maybe leaving it at 12 will be okay.
Thanks for your thoughts. Maybe I'll get to it this weekend, after I
tweak the Slackware laptop some more.
