There are two files that get sourced on login, depending on how you
start a session:
.bash_profile
.bashrc

The only file I have starting with .bash is .bash_history
Since I've had some doubts about the completeness of the Slackware
installation on ENU-2 I decided to look at my Slackware laptop. It does
not have .bash_profile or .bashrc. The answer is found at:
https://docs.slackware.com/howtos:cli_manual:shells
Slackware does not, by default, use .bashrc or .bash_profile. That is
left as an option for the user. I still need to do some more reading to
understand why I get my user name when I log in via ssh, but I suspect
I'll find it. Alas, work now calls, so I'll pursue that later today.
Thanks to all for the pointers you gave.
