The USB stick will always have the original kernel from release day. Since
Slackware14.2 is from 2016, it will be a 2016 kernel.

As for running nouveau while waiting for a fix, you have to do some stuff
first.
1) Run the nvidia-switch script. Ed has this documented on the SBo page:
 https://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.2/system/nvidia-legacy340-driver/

Check the instructions for details, the short version is you want to run
'nvidia-switch --remove'

2) Once you've restored the stock xorg files, go ahead and remove the
blacklist file for nouveau and reboot.
3) verify that nouveau loaded with "lsmod |grep nouveau"
4) If yes, then make sure your desktop opens and set up your dual monitor
display. You shouldn't see any resolution issues or errors from apps like
firefox, but if you do then wiping out the nvidia driver is pretty easy it
just requires a few additional steps.

I'm kind of curious to see if Ed's nvidia-switch script actually works in
the real world :-P
