Interesting thread. I've always used display to, naturally, display
image files. The man page description notes, "display - displays an
image or image sequence on any X server." I've not used it to view a
sequence of images so I cannot comment about that feature.
I had also never heard of 'display' so I started by typing it on the
command line. Up pooped the splash screen for ImageMagick, complete
with a wizard holding his wand. Of course, I have ImageMagick
installed, although I use it rarely, because it displays the image
instantly, but leaves the mouse pointer revolving for a long time. More
importantly, it offers only the view, no additional things like the
resolution or other properties, and no slide-show either. It doesn't
even have a menu bar. I don't usually need all the features of the GIMP
(also installed), but I do sometimes need a few additional features,
including the slide-show.

This thread has been very useful to me. I had been using Eye of Gnome
as my default image viewer on my laptop, but while poking at some of
the other image views that I have installed I discovered that I actually
prefer gThumb (which also offers the slide-show feature). Just now I
set to be my default, so my life is now slightly improved. :)

That actually reminds me about some of the other apps included in Slackware. There are so many quirky little utilities that I forget they exist.

Since Dick was having issues with GEarth, I wonder if Marble would do what he needs it to, it's installed by default.
