Interesting thread. I've always used display to, naturally, display
image files. The man page description notes, "display - displays an
image or image sequence on any X server." I've not used it to view a
sequence of images so I cannot comment about that feature.
I had also never heard of 'display' so I started by typing it on the
command line. Up pooped the splash screen for ImageMagick, complete
with a wizard holding his wand. Of course, I have ImageMagick
installed, although I use it rarely, because it displays the image
instantly, but leaves the mouse pointer revolving for a long time. More
importantly, it offers only the view, no additional things like the
resolution or other properties, and no slide-show either. It doesn't
even have a menu bar. I don't usually need all the features of the GIMP
(also installed), but I do sometimes need a few additional features,
including the slide-show.
As Richard points out, there is little that can't be done with the
ImageMagick display tool.
For a slide show:
display -delay N file1 file2 file3 ...
where N is the delay between 'slides' in seconds.
To get the resolution (and anything else you would want to know), left
click to bring up the menu, select 'Miscellany', then select 'Image Info'.
