Beware of brand new HP printers. There may not be support for them in

Sorry I missed the earlier post. I was up to my eyeballs performing
miraculous feats to appease my corporate overlord.
Yeah. Work gets in the way a lot of times. Oh, well. It keeps the lights
on and the Internet connection up.
Seems y'all went
around in circles and did not think go to the HPLIP web site to check on
printer support.

So I matched the printer model, but what I didn't do is was check the
HPLIP version. On Ubuntu I have 3.17.10. And, as you note below, on
Slackware I have 3.16.5. Sigh.
Slackware-14.2 includes hplip-3.16.5 which is is too old for your
printer. Support for the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw was added with
hplip-3.18.9 on 26 September 2018.

I followed the link to https://launchpad.net/hplip and asked my
question, the one for which I received no answer.
Slackware-current (15.0 BETA) has hplip-3.19.1 and when that hits
'stable' you'll have full print/scan functionality.
That's good to know. I'll get by for now, but it will be nice to be able
to scan with xsane again.
Thanks.
