On my Ubuntu MATE 18.04 machine, when I open a program, like Thunderbird or Firefox, it used to be that the window would open on the monitor where the cursor was moved to quickly after clicking on the launch icon. For some time now, it's opened in the left-hand window (the primary one). I'd like to have it open where the mouse cursor is. The same is true when I right click to create a new folder on the desktop. Now, instead of opening where the mouse is, it opens in the upper left corner of the desktop, most of the time. The exception is if there is already something in the upper left corner. Then it opens where the mouse is.

Possibly related is with Virtual Box. I normally have a window for it in the lower, center of the left hand monitor. If I expand that window and then restore it, it decides that it wants to be in the center of the entire desktop, so it restores itself on the left hand side of the right hand monitor. Both of these behaviors are annoying.

Can anyone recommend the appropriate search foo to lead me to a way to disable this "smart window placement" behavior? I've searched with that foo, but the results are not useful. I'm thinking I don't know the right thing to call this.
