So, while the converter worked fine with the old Logitech trackball
the new
Kensington trackball is different enough that the existing converter will
not work with it.
If this is the case, can you suggest how I determine what converter will
work?

Sorry, I misunderstood ... I thought you meant the old trackball was
connected to the DIN. I didn't realize that the old trackball had been
connected through the converter in question.
My next guess/suggestion would involve looking at or changing the
settings for the device in MCC -> Hardware -> Setup Pointer Device. But
perhaps you have done that already? I cannot imagine that the new
device is not supported, but I suppose that is always possible ... have
you checked that?
