My next guess/suggestion would involve looking at or changing the settings for the device in MCC -> Hardware -> Setup Pointer Device. But perhaps you have done that already? I cannot imagine that the new device is not supported, but I suppose that is always possible ... have you checked that?
Fred, No, I hadn't thought of looking at Xfce4's mouse/touchpad settings until now. With the Kensington plugged in the default remains "ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse" (which worked with the old Logitech trackball and any actual mouse I plug in a USB port). The other alternative reads "HID 04d9:0499". When the Kensington trackball is plugged in the alternative reads "Primax Kensington Eagle Trackball". With the mouse disconnected I tried making the Kensington Eagle Trackball the device. It appeared to not stick for a few tries, then it apparently did because with only the trackball connected the cursor would not move in the PS/2 port. And now (even after restarting X) the trackball just will not move the cursor even when connected directly to a USB port. Very strange. And, resetting the device to defaults makes no difference: the Kensington trackball now refuses to move the cursor. This is terra incognita for me as I've not had any trackball issues for as long as I can remember ... at least with the Logitech devices I had.
