I had an HP2605DN color printer that suffered that problem (and an Internet search will show that I wasn't alone). Over time the print quality would seriously degrade because toner dust would coat the internal mirrors. After messing with that process twice I took the printer to the recycler and vowed to never buy another HP laser printer.
My LJ5 (purchased 1997) still works fine. Portland Printer Place gave it a thorough cleaning a few years ago and that's all it needed. The color laster 2550C has gone bad, but the b/w LJ5 is great.
