Rather than using rsync, why not this:

Galen,
When the external hard drive is mounted I have always been able to copy
files (even directories) from it to the desktop. I can try that because it's
mounted on the same host as the destination directory.
I have used cp in the past to restore missing files but I don't want to lose
what's currenly in the INBOX (which alpine uses for the contents of
/var/spool/mail/rshepard). I thought that cp would overwrite the contents of
the existing directory because my mail uses mbox where all messages are in a
single file.
FYI rsync does not require the use of ssh. It's just common to use it.
Ah so.
Thanks,
Rich
