The .png image does look like what I got. I did not get the other issue
mentioned, where the cursor changed to a white circle with a line
through it. Also, every Writer feature I use continued to work normally.

Alas, no. I closed Writer when I finished the project I was working on.
I just opened a new document, and the cursor looks normal.

from a vertical solid bar to a vertical dotted bar. I have no idea why

close Writer and reopen it. That is not supposed to be the way to fix
things in Linux. Does anyone know why this happens, and how to fix it
without shutting down LO Writer?
