You need to configure your laptop with a static IP, at least until you get

Almost there.

Now using the ThinkPad X200[1].

Did another power-on reset of the new ER-X. Connected the laptop to the
router's eth0.

On the laptop:

ip address add 192.168.1.55/24 dev eth0
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0

Now ping 192.168.1.1 sent packets are received. Good.

Using firefox, opened 192.168.1.1 and logged in using ubnt/ubnt.

In the User tab added (changed) login name and password.

In the System tab added host name, LAN DNS IP address, domain name; restored
Russell's config.boot. Unfortunately, forgot to change the DHCP address
range; will do so after I get access to web interface again.

As the router rebooted I moved the Ethernet cable from eth0 to eth1. Reset
laptop's eth0 interface address to 192.168.55.6.

Root can ping 192.168.55.4 (router1's LAN gateway address) and firefox loads
the router's login page. But, when I enter the changed login name and
password the ER-X tells me that one or the other is incorrect.

If 192.168.55.6 can ping 192.168.55.4 does the first interface need to be
replaced with one from the router's DHCP lease range to be able to log in?

Is there a way to determine what it wants without re-doing everything?
(Which takes time but now the process listed above works using the X200.)

wants it.
