Well, since changing laptops resolved the connectivity issues I can
quickly re-do everything on this router and get the spare back up and
running.

One done, one to go.

1. Set second IP address (192.168.1.101/24) on dev eth0; that also set the
route.

2. Checked by pinging 192.168.1.1. Okay.

3. Pointed browser tab to 192.168.1.1.

4. Restored complete config.boot file; saved and rebooted.

5. Switched cat5e from eth0 to eth1.

6. Discovered that when the router rebooted it wiped out the interface IP
addresses on the laptop. How interesting!

7. Set laptop's interface IP address (ip addr add 192.168.55.6/24 dev eth0);
that set the route, too.

8. Repointed browser tab to 192.168.55.4, logged into router using default
name/password.

9. In Users tab changed login name/password.

10. In Systems set host name, time zone, and upgraded OS to 2.0.8. Rebooted.

11. Repeated Step 7.

Logged in to the router using new name/password.

What must have switched me off the track to success using the Dell is the
loss of interface IP address and route when the ER-X reboots. I must not
have checked that properly.

My thanks to Russell, Wes, Tomas,

Rich
