Splitting this off into a new thread since it's an interesting topc on it's own. See below for the original comments about Artix.
The thing I find most interesting about Artix is that they repeatedly make the point that they have few issues with systemd from a technical perspective. The majority of their complaints have to do with the behavior of the people running Arch systemd itself. I ran across an interesting post on their list archives where a developer said very clearly that "users" are not important, only developers. I'm paraphrasing, and if i can find the link I'll share because I ran across it at work and was like WOAH WTF. Arch users do like to live on the bleeding edge, and so does Artix but in their opinion, systemd doesn't represent the latest and greatest the Linux platform has to offer, so they aren't moving forward with it. Hot-rodding your OS isn't any fun when people start to dictate which upgrades you are allowed to install. I think there's a lot of misinformation on the various linux blogs regarding the extent of systemd's adoption. Here's a brief list of non-systemd distros for those who may be interested in some additonal init context - Slackware: oldest actively maintained distribution - PCLinuxOS: Another oldie, still going, #15 on distrowatch.com at time of writing - MX Linux: Currently holds the top position on distrowatch - Artix: fork of Arch Linux staying with openrc (not sysv) - Devuan: Fork of Debian to maintain non-systemd init - Gentoo: Maintains systemd and non-system source trees. Also spearheaded development of eudev used by other non-systemd distros distrowatch can be misleading, but regardless, these are not small projects. All 5 of the distributions mentioned are behemoths in the community that, combined, can eclipse any one distro, group, or company. Red Hat isn't as big as they seem to think, given that they just got swallowed by IBM. That must have hurt LP's ego LOL I personally find it offensive when people look at these distros and claim that we aren't important. -Ben On Thu, 26 Dec 2019 16:29:53 -0800 Ben Koenig <[email protected]> wrote: > Nobody is complaining about the software. Artix compiled a nice list of concerns when the > forked Arch > https://artixlinux.org/faq.php huh, I am surprised Arch users were concerned enough about this to fork. When I think of Arch I think of it being the hot-rodder distro, as in the guys who are always tweaking out their cars to look or sound the coolest without much concern for other things. I guess systemd was just too horrible even for them. Unlike Debian where what comes to mind is the 'conservative' distro where reliability is of the upmost concern. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
