I don't have your printer, or any models close to it, but I do have
several HP printers, and for each one HP provides a troubleshooting
manual that describes issues like you describe. For each issue it tells
you what component to replace or clean. There are lots of components in
a laser printer, and I've found their documentation to be extremely
helpful.

I didn't take the time to look for troiubleshooting tips for the 2600,
but hp.com would be my first place to go.
