What I need is the ability to select audio input (mic on/off) and output
(headphones, speaker) using either the command line or a gui (ncurses, gtk,
whatever). Consider me an old dog trying to learn new tricks.

The following are packages on SBo.

I just installed pnmixer ("GTK volume mixer applet that runs in the system
tray.") When I run it, it won't:

$ pnmixer
error: /tmp/SBo/pnmixer-0.7.2/src/alsa.c: 'default': Can't get playback dB
range: Invalid argument
error: /tmp/SBo/pnmixer-0.7.2/src/alsa.c: 'default': Can't get playback dB
range: Invalid argument
error: /tmp/SBo/pnmixer-0.7.2/src/alsa.c: 'default': Can't get playback dB
range: Invalid argument

So, that's not what I want.

One possibility is ponymix. This is what it showed:
$ ponymix list
sink 6: alsa_output.pci-0000_0a_00.3.analog-stereo
  HD-Audio Generic Analog Stereo
  Avg. Volume: 100%
source 9: alsa_output.pci-0000_0a_00.3.analog-stereo.monitor
  Monitor of HD-Audio Generic Analog Stereo
  Avg. Volume: 100%
source-output 83: Peak detect
  PulseAudio Volume Control
  Avg. Volume: 100%

However, I then installed apulse. When I tried running it nothing happens:
$ apulse
[rshepard@salmo ~]$

and now ponymix cannot find any devices:

$ ponymix list
[apulse] [error] Z pa_operation_get_state operation is NULL
[apulse] [error] Z pa_operation_get_state operation is NULL
[apulse] [error] Z pa_operation_get_state operation is NULL
sink 0: default_sink_name
  default and only sink
  Avg. Volume: 0%
source 0: default_source_name
  default_source_name
  Avg. Volume: 0%

Help!

Please educate me in controlling audio input/output devices as I am done
digging myself deeper in the hole.

Rich
