Have you tried redirecting the output signal prior to HDMI cable insertion?
For my version of Ubuntu if I press "Window-p" I get a menu of possible output targets. Prior to inserting the cable make sure the output is "laptop screen only". Insert the cable, and then try "duplicating" the screen, so that if it fails you still have a UI to return to laptop screen only. If all of that works, then try to be more adventurous. That key combo doesn't seem to work with Ubuntu. I will have to try finding one that does. Funny thing I noticed tonight, even if the TV is off, plugging the cable in causes the issues.
